Dillon Gabriel: Heisman Dark Horse?

The leaves are changing, the holidays are a turkey leg away, and the Heisman awkward is in disarray. The current favorite at DraftKings sports book is Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. After a miraculous comeback and game-winning drive vs Oregon last week, Penix is in the driver's seat to win his first Heisman award. Penix's stat line is very impressive as well. He currently is 155-215 on passing attempts and has 20 touchdowns to three interceptions. Many consider the Heisman award a “wrap” with Penix’s name already embroidered into the plaque, however, Sooner fans would disagree. Oklahoma's quarterback has a similar stat line with 16 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Gabriel also has a “Heisman moment” as well, leading Oklahoma with a game-winning touchdown pass as time expired.

In today’s College Football Landscape, the Heisman is a team award more than anything. Both Oklahoma and Washington are undefeated; Washington’s schedule the last month proved to be much more difficult. Washington finished the season with a road game at USC, at home vs Utah (who will be returning their all-American quarterback), at #12 ranked Oregon State, and finished with an in-state game vs rival Washington State.

Oklahoma finishes the season with a much easier schedule. They finish the season with games against Oklahoma St, West Virginia, BYU, and at home vs TCU. The best remaining team based on team statistics would be BYU who is currently 4-2 and has struggled most of the year. Look for Dillon Gabriel to make a run at the Heisman with valuable odds at 10/1. Go Sooners!
