Is Saban still National Title Chasin'?
College Football: Breaking down the CFB Championship odds
College football is in full effect! Ohio State is coming off an impressive performance defensively vs Penn State. Michigan suffocated little brother Michigan State for 60 minutes, and Alabama came back with an impressive win over Tennessee. There are still five weeks remaining in the College Football regular season. This will include plenty of upsets remaining and pure chaos coming! We look to break down the betting odds and find value in the next national champion!
First, Georgia/Michigan are co-favorites at +250 to win the national championship. For every $100 wagered, you would win $250 in profit in addition to your $100 back. Michigan dismantled Michigan State last Saturday 49-0 to improve to 8-0. +250 may seem like a great bet, but I do not like the short odds for multiple reasons. Reason #1: Michigan still has Ohio St and Penn State (at Happy Valley) remaining on their schedule. Reason #2: Michigan is currently being investigated by the NCAA for a sign-stealing scandal. They may not be punished until after the season, however, this is a distraction in the locker room and could negatively impact their performance. With Michigan having problems outside the field, and two top 10 teams remaining on their schedule; I would wait and bet them at better odds. If they lose to one of these two teams you will get much higher odds and there will still be a great chance they make the
CFP playoffs as the #4 seed.
The second favorite is Georgia. Georgia is the two-time defending national champion, and if you bet them I would not have much of an argument. The only concern is their best player and future first-round tight end Brock Bowers is out indefinitely. He very well could come back for the playoffs, but with only being +250 I would wait until we get more insight on the injury or hope they drop one game and still make the playoffs.
Ohio State at +700. Now we're starting to get into some longer shots and bigger payouts! Ohio St at +700 seems a little ridiculous after beating Penn State convincingly last Saturday. My only concern would be with their offense. In their two big games their offense has looked average at best. Their defense is one of the best in the country, but until I see their offense dominate a great opponent, I will not be betting on them as the 2024 national champion!
Finally, we have my favorite longshot bet, and its Alabama +1400 to win the national championship! At 14/1, their betting odds have them at only a 7% chance to win the title! I will take those odds all day! All season long we have heard is, “Nick Saban should retire”, Don’t look now, but Bama has won their last six games, including victories over two top 20 opponents in Tennessee and Ole Miss. With added motivation for coach Saban, and 14/1 odds, give me Alabama as my favorite value play at 14/1. Roll Tide!
